Thalictrum “Splendide White”

A few years ago my husband and I went on a garden tour in Normandy and visited the exciting Le Jardin Plume.

It was and is an exceptional example of brilliant and idiosyncratic design. After touring the garden, we checked out their selection of plants for sale. Amongst them were a couple of unfamiliar white Thalictrums.

We bought both kinds and took them home to plant in the newly developed ‘Red & White Bed’.

“I decided to take a risk…”

At first I used only the Thalictrum delavayi “Album” which grows to 3.5 to 4’/ 110-120cm, fearing that the statuesque “Splendide” 5’/1.5m, would be blown over by our vicious winds.”

However, after seeing what a wonderful combination the Thalictrums made with the lilies, and noticing that the Splendides started flowering earlier and stopped later, I decided to take a risk and try the taller variety.

“This is a really delightful, refined plant”

The first ones I planted were in a slightly protected spot.  But this year one of them was accidentally transplanted to the edge of a bed, right in the path of the prevailing winds (gales, actually), with no protection whatsoever.

It is now the end of the season (August 12) and the plant is perfectly fine.  However, I did give it a discrete support, so maybe that’s cheating…

I have found that, although they are very happy in part shade with moisture, they will also perform well in full sun, given a certain amount of protection to their roots from the shade of other plants and adequate water during dry, hot periods.

This is a really delightful, refined plant giving a long season of bloom and the benefit of a lasting stem framework after the flowers have fallen.  I highly recommend it.
